The best made-to-measure and modular shelving in the UK: eight brands compared

Eight made-to-measure and modular shelving brands that deliver in the UK: what each is best for, its strengths, and its trade-offs. By Mestra.

The short answer

There is no single best made-to-measure shelving in the UK. The right one depends on your wall, the material you want, and how long you can wait. For wall-hung shelving cut to the width of your wall, look at Mestra for birch plywood or ON&ON for aluminium. For a freestanding piece you design online, look at Pickawood or Tylko. For a system to keep and add to for decades, look at Vitsoe’s 606. Jali makes painted MDF kits to your exact size. Regalraum offers a simple wall of shelves quickly and at a low price. Shelved makes grid-based modular storage in North Yorkshire. If your walls are uneven or the storage must be built in, use a joiner.

Mestra wrote this guide, and we make one of the systems in it. We checked every brand, ours included, against the same five points, using each brand’s own website on 6 October 2026. We have not scored or ranked them, and they appear in alphabetical order.

How we compared

We looked at eight brands that sell made-to-measure or configurable shelving and deliver in the UK, with a local joiner as the baseline. For each one, we checked five things on its own website:

  • Fit to your wall. Can you set the width of the run to your own measurement, or do you choose from set bay or module sizes? Fit is the point of made-to-measure shelving.
  • Wall or floor, and change. Does it hang on the wall, stand on the floor, or both? Can you move shelves or add to it later?
  • Material. What are the shelves and the structure made of?
  • Cover. How long is the guarantee, and can you return it if you change your mind?
  • Price and wait. What does an example wall cost, and how long is the usual UK lead time?

Where a brand publishes one, our example is an open shelving wall close to 1.8 m wide and 1.8 m high. Depth and shelf count still vary, so treat price per square metre as a rough guide, not a quote.

The eight brands, A to Z

Jali: made-to-measure MDF kits

Best for: painted shelving in an exact size on a tight budget, if you’re happy to build a kit.

Strengths

  • Any size up to 500 mm deep and 3 m wide or tall, set in the online Jali Designer.
  • 24 paint colours, white primer, plain MDF, or real oak veneer.
  • Floor-standing, or wall-mounted once you remove the plinth.
  • Made in Kent in 4 to 8 weeks, with free delivery to most of mainland UK.
  • Its default shelving design, 1539 × 750 × 200 mm in white primer, is £263.83.

Trade-offs

  • It is MDF throughout.
  • No returns, because each kit is made to your sizes.
  • Shelf positions are set when you design it. It is not a system you rearrange later.
  • It arrives as a flat-pack kit that you build with a screwdriver.

Not verified: a guarantee, and the price of a full-height wall.

Mestra: birch plywood bays set to your wall

This is our product. We checked it against the same five points as the others.

The edge of a shelf, showing the layers of Baltic birch plywood

Best for: a wall-mounted run in real wood that you design online, with time to try it at home.

Strengths

  • The shelving is made from 18 mm Baltic birch plywood, finished by hand in one of 13 hardwax oil colours. A solid melamine colour over the plywood is also available; we confirm the colour and price with you.
  • Each bay can be any width from 500 mm to 800 mm, set in 1 mm steps, so the run matches the wall you measured. We quote narrower or wider bays.
  • Shelves and cabinets lift off the rails and hook back on at another 100 mm position, and you can add a bay later. Shelves are 220 mm or 300 mm deep, and also 360 mm between bookends. Cabinets are 360 mm deep.
  • You can buy single replacement parts, so a damaged shelf or rail is a part, not a new unit.
  • A ten-year warranty, and a 60-day Home Trial from the day your order arrives. If you send it back in that time, we collect it at no cost, provided the parts can be resold.
  • The price shows as you design in the configurator, including VAT and mainland UK delivery.
  • Each order is made in our Norfolk workshop.

Trade-offs

  • It costs more per square metre than most systems here. Mestra shelving in three bays of open shelving, 1836 × 1800 mm with 18 bookended shelves, is £2,160.45. One bay, 632 mm wide, is £828.34.
  • The lead time is 5 to 10 weeks from order. Our terms commit to delivery within 12 weeks.
  • Heights follow the rails: 900 mm, or 1800 mm with two rails. Some layouts use a low 395 mm rail.
  • It is wall-mounted only, in straight runs. Bays are not scribed to uneven walls, and the configurator does not turn corners.
  • You fit it yourself. Fixings and fitting tools come in the box, matched to your wall. We check your wall type with you before we send them. You bring the drill.

ON&ON: aluminium shelves cut to your wall

Best for: a long, straight wall of books, where you want shelves cut to length at a lower price.

Strengths

  • Shelves are cut to size, in lengths up to 5 m, so a run can fill an alcove or a wall from end to end. Shelf parts are priced per metre and charged in 10 cm steps.
  • Rails, brackets, and shelves are aluminium, with a high share of recycled aluminium. Oak or walnut fronts are optional.
  • Parts are made in the UK and cut to measure at its St Albans workshop. Planning is free, and it offers free site visits within about 1.5 hours of St Albans.
  • A lifetime guarantee covers structural parts and components.
  • Our example, a 2400 × 1960 mm wall-mounted home library with 255 mm deep shelves, is £1,710 in white, or £2,159.28 with oak fronts.

Trade-offs

  • There is no online configurator. You plan with its team, then pay by invoice.
  • Made-to-measure systems can’t be returned unless they are faulty or not as described.
  • Its FAQ gives a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks; its delivery page says 6 to 10 weeks. Delivery is quoted per order, at £10 to £100 for a one-person delivery.
  • You fit it yourself or use a builder. Its own fitting team is quoted where it covers your area.
  • The look is metal-first. Wood shows only on the optional fronts.

Pickawood: solid wood, made to the centimetre

Best for: a solid wood piece in an unusual size, when you are sure of your measurements.

Strengths

  • The widest size range here. Its hanging shelf can be 300 mm to 6000 mm wide, 300 mm to 3000 mm high, and 150 mm to 600 mm deep, set to the centimetre.
  • Eleven solid woods, plus plywood, real wood veneer, MDF, and decor board.
  • Hanging shelves have wall brackets built into the vertical panels. Freestanding bookcases are also available.
  • UK delivery is free, including customs and taxes, by a two-person team.
  • A five-year furniture warranty, plus a free fit warranty that covers alteration costs up to £1,200 if a piece doesn’t fit the space you planned.
  • Our example, a 3500 × 1790 × 210 mm hanging shelf in white decor board, is £1,606.50.

Trade-offs

  • Lead times on its listings run from 8 to 13 weeks.
  • It does not take back custom-made furniture.
  • A finished piece keeps its layout. It is not a rail system you rearrange.

Not verified: where it is made, what its decor board is made of, and the price of its assembly service.

Regalraum: low-cost wall systems, delivered fast

Best for: a quick, low-cost wall of shelves, where an exact width matters less.

Strengths

  • A wide range of systems in its 3D configurator, including STEP wall shelves on steel brackets that you can extend later. Some systems take boards cut to your size.
  • Its STEP wall shelves showed a delivery time of 1 week.
  • Low prices. STEP XL-3×5, 1850 mm or 2450 mm wide and 1800 mm high, starts at £299.
  • 100-day returns on standard items.

Trade-offs

  • STEP boards are engineered wood with a veneer or melamine face, produced in Austria. Regalraum sources its range from suppliers in Europe and Asia.
  • Items cut to your size can’t be returned, and returns from the UK cost £14.95.
  • It offers the statutory warranty only.
  • Delivery is £14.95 to £19.95, and free from £300. Large orders arrive kerbside on a pallet. It does not deliver to Northern Ireland, the islands, or the Scottish Highlands.

Not verified: lead times for cut-to-size or larger configured orders.

Shelved: modular and UK-made, on a grid

Best for: modular storage you want within weeks, where a 40 cm grid suits the room.

Strengths

  • Made in North Yorkshire and delivered free to mainland UK in 3 to 4 weeks.
  • A tool-free steel frame that you can take apart, extend, or split into separate pieces.
  • An online configurator and a free design service.
  • A five-year guarantee, subject to fair wear and tear.
  • Our example, Beadlam, 1620 × 2050 × 420 mm with 20 open shelves, is £1,629.95.

Trade-offs

  • It works on a 40 cm grid with a 42 cm standard depth, and part sizes can’t be changed. It won’t match a wall to the centimetre.
  • Panels are 18 mm melamine-faced particleboard on a powder-coated steel frame.
  • Units stand on the floor and must be fixed to the wall.
  • Change-of-mind returns must start within 14 days, with a £75 collection charge.
  • Its listed assembly partners charge 10% of the product price plus £25.

Tylko: an online configurator for freestanding pieces

Best for: a freestanding bookcase or storage piece you design online, with a long return window.

Strengths

  • Original Classic is 19 mm plywood made from 13 cross-laminated layers of birch, with the edges left exposed and oiled. Other lines use particleboard: Original Modern is 18 mm particleboard, and Classic Veneer is real wood veneer over 19 mm particleboard.
  • You set width, height, depth, and layout in the configurator. The price and production estimate update as you change the design.
  • A ten-year warranty on storage furniture, and free 100-day returns shown on its UK product pages.
  • Our example, an Original Classic plywood bookcase 1510 × 1330 × 320 mm, was £1,095 on offer (£1,766 full price), with a shipping estimate of 5 to 6 weeks.

Trade-offs

  • Tylko recommends fixing Original pieces to the wall to stop tipping, but advises against hanging them with no floor support. It is not a wall-hung shelving system.
  • Each piece is designed as one unit. We did not find a way to add bays to it later.
  • UK delivery carries a fee, worked out at checkout.
  • Prices are usually shown against a higher full price, so compare like for like.
  • Assembly is self-assembly. Its paid assembly service covers England and Scotland.

Not verified: maximum sizes, the width step in the configurator, and where each line is made.

Vitsoe 606: the long-term modular system

Best for: a system you plan to keep, move, and add to for decades.

Strengths

  • E-Tracks are anodised aluminium, and the standard shelves are powder-coated 1.6 mm steel. Some shelves, cabinets, and desks come in beech veneer over MDF.
  • It mounts straight on the wall, on posts in front of an uneven wall, between floor and ceiling, or freestanding.
  • A planner designs it with you at no charge, by phone, video call, or email. Vitsoe says every part it has made since 1960 still fits.
  • A lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Typical UK orders dispatch in 2 to 4 weeks, and UK delivery is included. Vitsoe’s own installers work in the UK, for a separate fee.
  • Prices are published. Three 655 mm bays on 1710 mm tracks with 18 steel shelves 220 mm deep add up to about £1,536 at list price, before fitting.

Trade-offs

  • There are two bay widths, with 655 mm or 900 mm shelves. A run will not match an alcove to the centimetre.
  • The look is metal-first. Wood is limited to beech-veneer parts.
  • Made-to-order items can’t be cancelled. The 14-day cancellation right covers standard parts only, and you pay to return them.

Not verified: installation charges. The £1,536 is our sum of Vitsoe’s list prices, not a Vitsoe quote. For more options in this style, see our guide to Vitsoe alternatives in the UK.

How to choose

Start with what matters most for your wall, then look at the brands that suit it.

  • Want a wall-hung system you can add to: Mestra, ON&ON, or Vitsoe.
  • Want the width set to your own measurement: Jali, Mestra, ON&ON, Pickawood, or Tylko.
  • Want it freestanding: Pickawood or Tylko. Shelved, if a 40 cm grid suits the room.
  • Want real wood: Mestra, or Tylko’s Original Classic, for birch plywood. Pickawood for solid wood.
  • Want metal: ON&ON or Vitsoe.
  • Want it soon: Regalraum (1 week for STEP), Shelved (3 to 4 weeks), or Vitsoe (2 to 4 weeks to dispatch).
  • Want to spend as little as possible: Jali or Regalraum.
  • Want to try it at home first: Mestra (60-day Home Trial) or Tylko (100-day returns).
  • Want it scribed, built in, or turning a corner: a joiner. See below.

When a joiner is the better route

A system can’t do everything. A local joiner is the better choice when:

  • walls, floors, or ceilings are out of true, and you want shelves scribed to them with no gaps
  • the storage turns a corner, wraps a chimney breast, or includes a window seat or desk
  • it has to match cornicing, panelling, or a fireplace surround
  • you want floor-standing cupboards built into the alcove

Checkatrade’s September 2026 guides put fitted alcove cupboards and shelves at £2,250 on average, within a range of £500 to £4,000. Supplying and fitting six simple shelves in an alcove averages about £390. Carpenters charge £300 to £450 a day, and shelf material runs about £70 per metre in MDF or plywood, or £230 per metre in hardwood.

A joiner’s lead time, guarantee, and final price depend on the joiner. Ask for drawings, a fixed quote, and what the guarantee covers. Our guide to made-to-measure shelving vs joinery walks through which route fits which brief. If you’re not sure, send us a photo and rough measurements for a free fit review.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best made-to-measure or custom shelving in the UK?

It depends on your wall and what you want it made of. For wall-hung shelving cut to your wall’s width, look at Mestra for birch plywood or ON&ON for aluminium. For a freestanding piece designed online, look at Pickawood or Tylko. For a system to keep and add to for decades, look at Vitsoe. For a low price, look at Jali or Regalraum. If the walls are out of true, a joiner will give the closest fit.

What is the best modular shelving system in the UK?

Vitsoe’s 606 has the longest record. Vitsoe says every part it has made since 1960 still fits, and it gives a lifetime guarantee. It comes in two bay widths. Mestra and ON&ON are modular too, and both match your wall’s width more closely. Shelved is modular on a 40 cm grid and delivers in 3 to 4 weeks. Our guide to modular shelving units explains how a modular system changes over time.

Is made-to-measure shelving cheaper than a joiner?

Often, but not always. Checkatrade puts fitted alcove cupboards and shelves at £2,250 on average, and six simple alcove shelves at about £390. Our full-height examples from Mestra, ON&ON, and Vitsoe, for walls 1.8 m to 2.4 m wide, run from about £1,536 (Vitsoe, our estimate) to £2,160.45 (Mestra). Regalraum’s STEP wall shelf starts at £299. A joiner usually fits the job. With most systems here, you fit it yourself.

Which of these brands make their shelving in the UK?

Jali (Kent), Mestra (Norfolk), ON&ON (St Albans), Shelved (North Yorkshire), and Vitsoe (Royal Leamington Spa) make in the UK. Regalraum sources from suppliers in Europe and Asia, and its STEP boards are produced in Austria. We did not verify where Pickawood or Tylko make their furniture.

Can I return made-to-measure shelving if I change my mind?

Usually not. Mestra (a 60-day Home Trial) and Tylko (100-day returns) give the longest windows on made-to-order designs. Jali, ON&ON, and Pickawood don’t take change-of-mind returns on made-to-measure items. Regalraum excludes items cut to your size, and Shelved allows 14 days with a £75 collection charge. Vitsoe’s 14-day right covers standard parts, returned at your cost.

Will I have to fit it myself?

With Jali, Mestra, and Regalraum, yes. With Mestra, fixings and fitting tools come in the box, matched to your wall, and we check your wall type with you before we send them. ON&ON quotes its fitting team where it covers your area. Pickawood and Shelved can arrange assembly at extra cost. Tylko offers paid assembly in England and Scotland. Vitsoe has its own installers in the UK, for a fee. Whoever fits it, check your wall type first, and get professional advice if you’re unsure what it will hold.
