Craftsmanship

Our Materials

Every MESTRA shelving system starts with real birch plywood, selected for strength, stability, and the exposed edge detail that makes the construction honest. We pair that core material with durable finishes chosen for everyday homes, so the shelves feel warm, precise, and easy to live with.

What we look for

Materials chosen for structure, finish, and everyday use.

We choose materials that suit wall-mounted furniture: stable structure, dependable fixings, clean detailing, and surfaces that can handle daily use without feeling delicate. Birch plywood is central to the range because it gives shelves and cabinets strength while keeping visible edges crisp.

Finishes are selected to work with the timber rather than hide it. Where a project needs a different look, we can discuss samples, colour direction, and practical trade-offs before confirming the specification.

Birch plywood shelving

Birch plywood is the core Mestra material because it gives the system a real timber structure and a visible layered edge. It is useful when the shelf is meant to be part of the room rather than a temporary board.

MDF, melamine and veneer

MDF, melamine and veneered boards can be right for some furniture, but they are different materials with different repair, edge and moisture trade-offs. Compare the board, finish and support before choosing.

Shelf sagging questions

Whether plywood, MDF, melamine, pine or metal shelves sag depends on span, thickness, load, support and fixing. Do not treat material alone as a load guarantee.

Choosing a route

Match the material question to the page that owns it.

Use this page for material choices, birch plywood shelving, MDF vs plywood questions, wood shelves cut to size, and shelf sagging checks. Use made-to-measure pages when the main question is the fit of the wall.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood because it gives made-to-measure shelving a rigid, dependable structure without hiding the material behind imitation veneer. The layered edge is part of the design, not a detail to disguise.

Practical finishes

Finishes are selected to protect the timber while keeping the surface natural to the touch. They are suitable for books, objects, and day-to-day storage, with care kept simple for busy homes.

Made to fit

Materials are cut for each order, so dimensions, shelf spans, and installation details can be matched to the room. That keeps the system modular while still feeling built for your space.
