The short answer: choose Shelved if you want a floor-standing unit on a steel frame, built on a 40 cm grid, delivered in 3 to 4 weeks at a lower price, with corner units, TV units, and desks in the same system. Choose Mestra if you want shelving that hangs on the wall from rails, in 18 mm Baltic birch plywood, with each bay set to your wall in 1 mm steps, a ten-year warranty, and a 60-day Home Trial. Both are modular and made in the UK: Shelved in North Yorkshire, Mestra in Norfolk.
We make Mestra, so we have an interest here. We have tried to be fair. Every fact about Shelved comes from Shelved’s own website, checked on 7 October 2026, and we say plainly where Shelved is the better choice.

What is Shelved?
Shelved is modular storage furniture made by Rack Systems, a family-run manufacturer in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, which has made parts for the office furniture industry for 30 years.
Each piece is a powder-coated steel frame that clicks together by hand, filled with shelves, cupboards, glass shelves, planters, or fabric panels. The range runs from shelving to sideboards, TV units, desks, and corner units. You can buy a ready-made design, adapt one or design your own in the 3D configurator, or use the free design service.
We make one shelving system that hangs on the wall, cut on a CNC router in our Norwich workshop and finished by hand. Mestra was founded in 2025.
Does Shelved stand on the floor or hang on the wall?
Shelved stands on the floor and is fixed to the wall to stop it tipping, while Mestra hangs on the wall from rails.
Shelved calls its units freestanding and says they suit uneven walls, but all its furniture must be securely fixed to a wall, and every order includes a wall fixing kit. So you still drill.
Our shelving hangs from rails, so the floor stays clear and the wall carries the weight. There is no freestanding version. Solid masonry suits heavy loading, stud and dot-and-dab walls light to medium loading, and lath and plaster walls are not suitable. If you cannot drill at all, neither system suits you. See wall-mounted vs freestanding shelving and wall-mounted shelving units.
What is Shelved made of?
Shelved is a powder-coated steel frame with melamine-faced particleboard shelves and panels, while Mestra is 18 mm Baltic birch plywood.
Shelved’s frame is 20 × 20 mm square steel tube, powder coated in Anthracite, White, or a clear coat that shows the steel. Its shelves and panels are 18 mm furniture-grade particleboard with a melamine face and matching ABS edging, in Graphite, White, or Oak. The Oak is melamine too.
Our rails, shelves, and cabinets are 18 mm Baltic birch plywood with the layered edges on show, finished by hand in Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C hardwax oil, in 13 colours. The grain shows through, and worn spots can be re-oiled. Melamine is available by quote.
Both brands take the sample price off a later order. At the time of writing (October 2026), Shelved’s kit is £20 and our packs start at £24, including VAT. See our materials, birch plywood vs MDF vs laminate, or order samples.
Will it fit my wall or alcove?
Shelved sizes move in fixed 40 cm steps, while Mestra bays are set to the millimetre, from 500 mm to 800 mm wide.
Shelved’s FAQ says its system is based on a 40 cm grid and the size of the parts cannot be changed. Widths step in 40 cm, such as 82, 122, or 162 cm. The shelving we priced is 165.5 cm or 205.5 cm high, and the standard depth is 42 cm. In an alcove 150 cm wide, a 122 cm unit leaves 28 cm spare, and 162 cm is too wide. You still choose the layout, modules, and finishes, but on a fixed grid.
Two of our bays could fill that alcove to within 20 mm of each wall, the clearance our planning guide asks for. Our open shelving stands 254 mm from the wall, which suits a shallow alcove.
