IKEA shelving alternatives in the UK: when to buy IKEA and when to pay more

IVAR, BILLY, KALLAX, or made-to-measure? A UK comparison of price, materials, sagging, alcove fit, and lead times, and when IKEA is the better buy.

The short answer. Buy IKEA when price and speed matter most and your wall suits standard sizes: two sections of IVAR shelving in solid pine cost £106, and a pair of BILLY bookcases costs £110. Pay more for a made-to-measure modular system like Mestra when the wall is the awkward part, you want 18 mm birch plywood, and you plan to change the shelving rather than replace it. Our two-bay open shelving layout is £1,496.71 at the time of writing (October 2026), made to order in 5 to 10 weeks.

IKEA is far cheaper and far quicker. That gap is not small, and for a lot of rooms it settles the question. This guide sets out what the extra money buys, where it buys nothing, and how to tell which side of the line your wall is on.

We checked every IKEA price, size, and material here on ikea.com/gb on 6 October 2026. IKEA changes prices and ranges often, so check the product page before you buy.

IKEA’s shelving lines, in brief

The IKEA IVAR shelving system

IVAR is untreated solid pine: side units with shelves that sit between them. Shelves are 42 or 83 cm wide and 30 or 50 cm deep. Side units come in 124, 179, and 226 cm heights. IKEA lists the 83 cm shelf as 1.8 cm thick with a 35 kg maximum load. IVAR stands on the floor and must be anchored to the wall. IKEA suggests oiling or waxing the pine, and says you can stain or paint it.

The BILLY bookcase

BILLY is particleboard and fibreboard with a paper foil surface and plastic edging. The standard unit is 80 cm wide, 28 cm deep, and 202 cm tall, with one fixed and four adjustable shelves, for £55. There are 40 cm wide units, 39 cm deep versions, a 106 cm tall version, and height extension units that take it to 237 cm. IKEA rates each 80 cm shelf at 30 kg and each 40 cm shelf at 14 kg. BILLY must be anchored to the wall.

The KALLAX shelving unit

KALLAX is a grid of cubes rather than a run of shelves. It is particleboard and fibreboard with a honeycomb paper filling, finished in acrylic paint, and 39 cm deep. Sizes run from 42 x 42 cm to 182 x 182 cm. The 147 x 147 cm unit, with sixteen cubes, is £99 at the time of writing; IKEA marks that as a new lower price, down from £115. Each shelf takes up to 13 kg. Inserts add doors and drawers. KALLAX must be anchored to the wall, and some sizes can also be hung on it.

What the price gap buys

Start with the honest number. A pair of BILLY bookcases is £110. Each one ships in a single 36.85 kg box, which puts the order in IKEA’s £40 standard delivery band, so call it £150 delivered. Our two-bay open shelving layout, a similar size, is £1,496.71 with delivery to mainland UK included. That is roughly ten times as much.

The extra money does not buy more shelf space. Two BILLYs give you ten shelves across 160 cm. Our two bays give you twelve shelves across 1234 mm, and at 220 mm our standard shelves are shallower than BILLY’s 28 cm.

What it does buy:

  • A width set to your wall. Each bay can be any width from 500 to 800 mm, in 1 mm steps.
  • Real birch plywood. Every shelf, rail, and cabinet is 18 mm Baltic birch plywood, with the layered edges on show.
  • A finish you can repair. The hardwax oil soaks into the birch, and worn spots can be re-oiled.
  • Parts that move. Shelves and cabinets hang on pins in the rails. Move a shelf, swap a cupboard for drawers, or add a bay later. You can buy single replacement parts, so a damaged shelf or rail is a part, not a new unit.
  • Local making and a long warranty. We make every order in Norfolk, and it carries a ten-year warranty.

If none of that matters for the room, the gap is hard to justify. A rented flat, a child’s room you will redo in a few years, or a garage are good places to spend £110, not £1,500.

Our pre-configured layouts start from £746.94 at the time of writing (October 2026), and one bay of open shelving is from £828.34. The configurator shows the live price as you build your own.

Materials and sagging

Any shelf bows if the load is too much for its span. Wood-based boards also deflect a little further under a load left on them for years. Engineers call that creep, and it applies to particleboard and plywood alike. What changes is how much load a shelf is rated for and how far it spans.

IKEA publishes a maximum load for each shelf:

  • BILLY, 80 cm shelf: 30 kg
  • BILLY, 40 cm shelf: 14 kg
  • BILLY, 80 x 39 cm deep version: 42 kg per shelf
  • KALLAX: 13 kg per shelf
  • IVAR, 83 cm pine shelf: 35 kg

Stay inside those figures. If you are unsure how heavy your books or records are, weigh a shelf’s worth on bathroom scales before you choose.

IVAR deserves a fair word. Its shelves are solid pine, 1.8 cm thick, the same thickness as our plywood, and IKEA rates the 83 cm shelf at 35 kg. If you want real wood on a tight budget, IVAR is the honest answer.

BILLY and KALLAX are particleboard under foil or paint. That keeps them light and cheap. It also means a chipped edge cannot be sanded out and refinished the way solid wood or oiled plywood can.

We make Mestra from 18 mm Baltic birch plywood: thin birch layers glued with the grain crossing. We use it for its rigid, stable structure and its layered edge. We plan each layout as a complete system, because how a shelf performs depends on its span, thickness, load, rail spacing, and wall fixing, not on the board alone. Standard bays are 500 to 800 mm wide. If you plan to store something heavy, such as a record collection, tell us when you request a fit review. Fitting alcoves and awkward walls

Alcove shelving is where the two routes split most clearly.

IKEA sizes are fixed. BILLY comes in 40 and 80 cm widths, IVAR shelves in 42 and 83 cm, and KALLAX in steps of about 35 cm. A 105 cm alcove takes one 80 cm BILLY with 25 cm left to fill.

The IKEA alcove shelving hack

The usual hack goes like this. Choose the unit that fits best and centre it. Fill the gaps with timber strips cut to follow the walls. Add a plinth at the bottom and a top board or cornice, then fill, prime, and paint everything to match. Done well, it looks fitted.

It takes real carpentry, and the result is fixed in place: changing it later means undoing the joinery. Check the ceiling before you plan a floor-to-ceiling run. IKEA’s BILLY pages say to leave enough space between the top of the bookcase and the ceiling to anchor it to the wall, and one lists a minimum ceiling height of 205 cm for the 202 cm unit.

How Mestra fits an alcove

You set the bay to the alcove. Measure the back wall at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the smallest figure. The configurator shows the overall width with the rails included, so match that to your narrowest measurement. A wider alcove takes two or more bays side by side, sharing a rail.

Mestra is not fully scribed. Each bay is straight and square, and most alcove walls are not, so expect small gaps at the sides that vary as the wall does. A joiner is the better choice when:

  • the walls are so far out of square that a straight bay would leave a wide gap at one side
  • you want shelves cut to touch both side walls along their full depth
  • the shelving needs to wrap a chimney breast or turn a corner
  • you want cupboards built in with skirting, cornice, or panelling to match the room
  • you cannot drill into the back wall

True built-in bookshelves are a joiner’s job. Mestra sits between the two: a closer fit than an IKEA hack, with every part still free to lift off the rails and move. See our bookcases page for book walls, shelf depths, and bookends.

When IKEA is the right call

  • The budget is tight, or the room will change in a few years.
  • You need shelving soon, not in two months.
  • Your wall suits standard widths, or a freestanding unit will do.
  • You want real wood for little money. IVAR is solid pine.
  • You want cube storage with boxes, doors, and drawers. KALLAX is built for exactly that.
  • You enjoy the hack and have the tools for it.
  • You want a long return window. IKEA’s is 365 days.

When Mestra is worth paying more for

  • The wall is the awkward part: an alcove, a run between a door and a window, or a width no flat-pack unit fits.
  • You want real birch plywood, oiled, with the layered edges on show.
  • You want wall-mounted shelving, with cupboards and drawers hung on the same rails.
  • You expect to change it: move shelves, swap a cupboard for drawers, or add a bay next year.
  • You want it made in the UK. We make every order in our Norfolk workshop.
  • You would rather fit it once and keep it, with a ten-year warranty behind it.
  • You can wait 5 to 10 weeks.

Not sure which side of the line your wall is on? Send us its measurements and a photo. We check the fit and suggest a layout, free and with no obligation to buy. To see the oil colours against your own walls, order a sample pack from £24; we deduct the pack price from your first shelving order.

What about BOAXEL, ELVARLI, and PLATSA?

These are IKEA’s modular shelving systems that hang on, or fix to, the wall and ceiling.

  • BOAXEL hangs powder-coated steel uprights from a rail screwed to the wall, with brackets for particleboard shelves 40, 60, or 80 cm wide and 40 cm deep. The 80 cm shelf is rated at 32 kg. One 62 x 40 x 201 cm section is £89. Most of IKEA’s ready-made BOAXEL combinations are wardrobes and laundry storage.
  • ELVARLI is still on sale at IKEA UK. Powder-coated aluminium posts adjust from 222 to 350 cm, and IKEA’s notes call for ceiling fixings, sold separately. Its 80 x 51 cm shelves are rated at 36 kg. It is the nearest IKEA gets to a floor-to-ceiling shelving system, though 51 cm is deep for books.
  • PLATSA is a frame-and-door storage system, mostly wardrobes, in particleboard and fibreboard with paper foil. Some frames hang on the wall from a suspension rail. IKEA warns not to hang its 55 cm deep frames.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make IKEA shelves look built in?

Yes, with carpentry. Fit the units, fill the gaps to the walls with strips cut to follow them, add a plinth and a top trim or cornice, then fill, prime, and paint. BILLY is the usual choice because it is plain and cheap. The result is fixed in place, so it suits a wall you will not want to change. Leave room above the units to anchor them to the wall, as IKEA advises.

Do IKEA shelves sag?

They can, like any shelf, if you load them past what they are rated for. IKEA publishes the figures: 30 kg for an 80 cm BILLY shelf, 14 kg for a 40 cm BILLY shelf, 13 kg for a KALLAX shelf, and 35 kg for an 83 cm IVAR pine shelf. All wood-based shelves deflect a little more over years under a constant load, so stay within those limits.

Is there an IKEA Vitsoe dupe?

Not an exact one. BOAXEL is the nearest in principle: uprights hung from a wall rail, with brackets for shelves. It is steel and particleboard, and IKEA sells it mainly as wardrobe storage. ELVARLI uses floor-to-ceiling aluminium posts instead. If you like the idea of a wall rail system but want wood, Mestra works that way: rails screw to the wall, and birch plywood shelves and cabinets hang on pins.

Which IKEA shelving is best for an alcove?

It depends on the width. Measure the narrowest point and compare it with BILLY’s 40 and 80 cm units, IVAR’s 42 and 83 cm shelves plus side units, or KALLAX’s cube sizes. Pick the combination that leaves the smallest gap, then fill the rest with timber. If no combination comes close, a made-to-measure bay or a joiner will give a cleaner result.

Is made-to-measure shelving worth the extra cost?

Only if the fit, the material, or the long life matters to you. For a similar open wall, IKEA costs about a tenth of what we charge. Made-to-measure earns its price when standard sizes leave awkward gaps, when you want real birch plywood, and when you plan to rearrange or add to the shelving rather than replace it.

Is Mestra cheaper than IKEA in the long run?

Not on price alone. Two BILLY bookcases cost about £150 delivered, and replacing them every five years comes to £600 over twenty years. Our two-bay open layout is £1,496.71. Mestra does cost less than buying twice: buy IKEA now and switch to Mestra in five years, and you pay £1,647 in total. Mestra also comes with a ten-year warranty, and you can replace a single part rather than the whole unit.

Can I fit Mestra shelving myself?

Yes. You screw the rails to the wall, then hang the shelves and cabinets on pins. Fixings and fitting tools come in the box, matched to your wall, including an alignment spacer with a built-in level. We fix to solid masonry, plasterboard, and dot-and-dab walls, and we check your wall type with you before we send the fixings. You bring the drill.
