Short answer: String is a Swedish shelving system from 1949. Its steel wire side frames fix to the wall or stand on the floor, its shelves come in 58 or 78 cm widths, and String lists its frames and shelves as shipping within 1 to 3 days. Mestra is wall-mounted modular shelving in 18 mm Baltic birch plywood, made to order in our Norfolk workshop, with each bay set to any width from 500 mm to 800 mm. String costs less and arrives sooner; Mestra fits your wall more closely, is birch plywood throughout, and comes with a ten-year warranty.

Both are modular. You can add a shelf, swap in a cabinet, or extend the run later. The real differences are the material, how closely each one fits the wall, how long you wait, and what you pay.

Materials

String’s side frames, the wire ladders the shelves rest on, are powder-coated steel. String sells them as wall panels and floor panels, and says the steel is 100% recycled. Its wooden shelves are particleboard with a surface layer: String’s own specification for the oak shelf is veneered particleboard under a clear lacquer, and the white, beige, and grey shelves are lacquered. There are perforated steel shelves too, with a low or high edge, and Plex frames in clear acrylic, a design String first launched in 1954.

String Pocket is a separate, smaller product: two wall frames and three shelves, 60 cm wide and 15 cm deep. Haus London notes that several Pocket shelves can be used together, but not with String System parts.

Mestra is 18 mm Baltic birch plywood all the way through: rails, shelves, and cabinets. The layered edge is on show. The hardwax oil soaks into the birch so the grain shows, and worn spots can be re-oiled. If you would rather have a solid colour, we also offer melamine and confirm the colour and price with you.

Plywood costs more than veneered particleboard. In return, the edge shows the same birch as the face, and a worn spot can be re-oiled rather than the shelf replaced. See our materials page, or order finish samples to see the plywood and colours in your own light.

On load, String recommends no more than 15 kg spread evenly across a 78 cm wooden shelf, and Haus London gives 20 kg for a 58 cm shelf. We plan each Mestra layout as a complete supported system, because how much a shelf holds depends on its span, the rail spacing, and the wall fixing, not on the board alone.

Fit

String shelves come in two widths, so a run grows in fixed steps. Across an alcove, that usually leaves a gap at one or both sides. Height comes from the frames. Wall frames are 50 or 75 cm tall and float clear of the floor. Floor frames are 85, 115, or 200 cm tall, and Haus London notes they clear a skirting board of up to 13 cm, or 4 cm more with extension feet.

With Mestra, you set each bay to any width from 500 mm to 800 mm, in 1 mm steps, so you can split an alcove or a wall into bays that fill it. The bays are straight and square. We don’t scribe them to uneven walls, so measure at several heights and use the narrowest figure. Shelves and cabinets move in 100 mm steps on the rails. Corners and L-shaped runs are priced by quote. Our made-to-measure shelving page explains what you can change and what stays fixed.

Ordering and fitting

You can buy String parts from String’s own website or from UK stockists such as Haus London, and plan a layout with String’s online planner. String lists its frames and shelves as in stock, so the parts can be on their way within days. Everything arrives flat-packed for you to assemble.

With Mestra, start from a pre-configured layout on the Mestra shelving page, or build your own in the configurator. If you aren’t sure it fits, send us your wall’s measurements and a photo: we check the fit and suggest a layout, free and with no obligation to buy. We make each order in Norfolk in 5 to 10 weeks, and payment is taken in full when you order.

It arrives flat-packed. You fix the rails, push in the pins, then hang the shelves and cabinets. Fixings and fitting tools come in the box, matched to your wall. They include an alignment spacer with a built-in level, a PZ2 driver bit, and a drill bit for your wall. We check your wall type with you before we send them. You bring the drill. With either system, if you aren’t sure how your wall is built, check it before you drill, and get professional advice if you need it.

Price

For a fair comparison, take two bays with twelve shelves in each system.

At String’s listed prices, three 200 cm floor frames (sold as floor panels, £280 for a two-pack, plus £149 for one more) and four three-packs of oak-veneer shelves, 58 × 30 cm (£143 each), come to £1,001. With white lacquered shelves at £121 a pack, it is £913. Haus London sells the same set as its Living Room Bundle A, and at the time of writing listed it at £849 in oak and white, shown reduced from £999.

Our open wall shelving unit with two bays and twelve bookended shelves is £1,496.71 at the time of writing (October 2026), with mainland UK delivery included. One bay is from £828.34, a two-bay unit with a cupboard is £2,205.52, and our media wall is from £3,316.75. Our pre-configured layouts start from £746.94.

So, for a similar two-bay wall, String costs about £500 less at list price. The difference pays for 18 mm birch plywood cut to your bay widths, making in Norfolk, a ten-year warranty, and a 60-day Home Trial. For a single small shelf, String Pocket is the cheaper route by a wide margin: Haus London lists it from £136.

When String is the better choice

  • You want it soon. String lists its frames and shelves as shipping within 1 to 3 days. We make every order from scratch, which takes 5 to 10 weeks.
  • Your budget is tighter. A comparable two-bay setup costs about £500 less at list price.
  • You want a floor-standing look. String’s floor frames rest on the floor. Mestra always hangs from the wall.
  • You like the String look. The thin wire frames are a recognised design from 1949, with a wide range of frame colours, metal shelves, hooks, and add-ons.
  • You only need a small shelf. String Pocket is 60 cm wide and 15 cm deep, from £136 at Haus London. Our pre-configured layouts start from £746.94.

When Mestra is the better choice

  • The wall sets the size. You choose each bay width to the millimetre between 500 mm and 800 mm, so an alcove or a full wall can be filled without odd gaps.
  • You want real plywood. Rails, shelves, and cabinets are 18 mm Baltic birch plywood with the layered edge on show, rather than a veneer or lacquer over particleboard.
  • You want closed storage at 360 mm deep. Drawer cabinets, cupboards, and open cabinets all hang on the same rails, and you can move them later.
  • You want the long view. A ten-year warranty and a 60-day Home Trial. You can buy single replacement parts, so a damaged shelf or rail is a part, not a new unit. Worn spots can be re-oiled.
  • You want it made in the UK. We make every order in our Norfolk workshop.

Frequently asked questions

Is String shelving worth it?

For many rooms, yes. It is a well-known design with a broad range of parts, it ships quickly, and it costs less than Mestra for a similar setup. Before you buy, check that the 58 and 78 cm shelf widths suit your wall, that the shelves (veneered or lacquered particleboard) suit what you plan to store, and that a two-year warranty is enough for you.

Is there a UK-made alternative to String?

Mestra is one. We make wall-mounted modular shelving from 18 mm Baltic birch plywood in our Norfolk workshop, with bay widths from 500 mm to 800 mm and a ten-year warranty. String is designed and made in Sweden.

What is String shelving made of?

The side frames are powder-coated steel wire, or clear acrylic for String Plex, and the shelves rest between them. Wooden shelves are particleboard with an ash, oak, or walnut veneer, or a lacquered colour. Metal shelves are perforated steel.

Will String shelving fit my alcove?

Only if the alcove happens to suit its fixed shelf widths of 58 or 78 cm. Otherwise you will have a gap at the sides. With Mestra, you set each bay width in 1 mm steps between 500 mm and 800 mm. Measure at several heights and use the narrowest figure.

String vs Vitsoe: how do they compare?

Both are long-running modular systems you can add to over time. String uses steel wire side frames with wooden or metal shelves. Vitsoe is metal-led and hangs from rails fixed to the wall. We compare Vitsoe, String, and other systems in our Vitsoe alternatives guide.

How long does each one take to arrive?

String lists its frames and shelves as in stock and shipping within 1 to 3 days. Mestra is made to order in Norfolk, which takes 5 to 10 weeks from order, and we deliver to the UK mainland with delivery included in the price.
